Hawaii Kona

I have written in my earlier post about Kailua. In the island of Kailua is a place called Kona. It is not a big place and is still a sleepy town compared to Honolulu but it does hold world events that attracts thousands of people. Kona is located Let me mentioned just two of the events that is would be of interest to some.

Kona is home to the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Kona's fishing grounds boast warm, deep waters, sunny skies, Aloha Spirit and the ability to hook up a marlin just five minutes after the tournament starts. It's fishing reputation was birth 48 years ago when Peter S. Fithian founded the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (HIBT). Since then, HIBT has earned its iconic status in big-game fishing tournaments and is known as the grandfather of all big game fishing tournaments. Not everybody can enter the tournament as it is only by invitation. This invitational tournament is built upon honor, prestige and strict adherence to International Game Fish Association rules for world records.

Another world event that attracts people from all over the world is the Ironman Triathlon World Championship. Firstly, the contestants have to swim accros the 2.4 mile seawater which begins at the Kailua Pier and stretches out into the bay. Secondly, it is followed by a 112 mile bike ride across the Hawaiian lava desert to Hawi and back, and thirdly, ending with a 26 7/32 mile marathon along the coast of the Big Island (from Keauhou to Keahole Point to Kailua-Kona), finishing on Ali'i Drive. If you think you are up to it, give yourself the challenge to compete and complete in this Triathlon. At the same time, enjoy your time in Hawaii Kona.
