Welcome to Birmingham the second largest city in England. It has the reputation as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in Britain. It is this fact that led to Birmingham being known as "the workshop of the world" or the "city of a thousand trades". You can call the people of Birmingham as 'Brummies', a term derived from the city's nickname of Brum.
If you are planning to visit Birmingham, do check out the events that they have throughout the year. One interesting event that you should consider attending is the Cardiff Summer Festival. It is a two months festival starting from 11th July 2008 and ends on 25th August 2008. It includes events such as Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival, Tesco Children's Festival, The Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend & MAS Carnival, Lloyds TSB Welsh Proms, and Mermaid Quay Cardiff Harbour Festival. You can stay in any of the Hotels in Cardiff. Some of the Cardiff Hotels and Birmingham Hotels offers cheap and reasonable room rates. Just make sure that you make room reservation much earlier before the event.
If you are there in winter, do not miss the Winter Wonderland where the Cardiff's City Hall lawn is transformed into the fun and festive Winter Wonderland with an open air ice rink, craft stalls and fairground rides. Do enjoy the Christmas celebrations here where beautiful lights are displayed. There is also the Admiral family fireshow that you might want to attend to.
